1.02 - What is snowboarding?

Snowboarding is a sport that can be visually compared to skateboarding and surfing except it is done on snow. The rider stands on the board sideways, just like skating or surfing. Feet are set apart and attached to the board using bindings. This is very different from monoskiing where both feet are side by side on a single ski and the skier faces forward. The snowboarder stands a quarter turn differently from the skier.

Some sports which have overlap in skills to snowboarding include: skateboarding, surfing, wake-boarding, kite surfing and certainly snow skiing. In the following sections many comparisons are made to skiing because of its widespread familiarity.
